Drones debut at The World Series

27 October 2023

As befits a massive sports event—baseball's The World Series—Fox Sports is deploying 52 cameras to capture the thrills of this year's contest between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks for excited viewers.

When Game One kicks off today, the platoon of cameras will include three drones for the very first time.

Previously, drones had seen action during the network's broadcast of All-Star and Field of Dreams games, as well as USFL football games. Fox first included drones to shoot production video in 2015.

Fox partnered with Beverly Hills Aerials for this customized trio of drones, and plans to use them for capturing warm-ups, relief pitchers, and more. All of the World Series drones are FPV types, and a pilot situated in the outfield will launch one drone at a time. Furthermore, the drones are equipped with 4k cameras shooting 1080p HDR footage that has enough resolution to actually be used on stadium jumbo screens.

Other cameras to be used in the broadcast include Fox's new UmpCam (set into the home-plate umpire's mask), a FlyCam, three DirtCams (at home plate and first and second base), three RF cameras, and 13 Super Motion cameras. More than 100 microphones will be postioned to bring the sound of the games into viewers' homes.
